Why the brand count and the licence count are so different
The single most useful thing on this page is the gap between two numbers: 142 companies hold an active remote casino licence, but there are thousands of casino brands marketed to UK players. Those aren't thousands of companies — they're skins. One licensed operator can run hundreds of differently-branded front ends against a single licence, and two "rival" casinos are routinely the same platform, the same games and the same terms in different colours.
Jumpman Gaming lists 229 domains against one licence; ProgressPlay lists 191. Meanwhile the median licensee lists exactly one. The market looks far more competitive from the outside than it is from the inside — which is worth knowing before you "shop around".
More than a third of listed domains are dead
805 of the 2,242 domains on the register are marked inactive — brands that launched, ran and were retired. White-label sites are cheap to start and cheap to close, so churn is constant. When we ran our own licence checks, every domain marked inactive that we tested corresponded to a site that had genuinely shut down, usually with a closure page pointing players to a sister brand.

The Gambling Commission publishes the whole register asfour downloadable CSV files: businesses, licences, domain names and trading names, joined on the account number. Everything on this page marked "how we counted" comes from those files and can be reproduced in a few lines of code. If you find we've got a number wrong,tell us and we'll correct it and say so.
